Currently // Vol. Six

Thinking//
About back to school. This is the first year of my life where I haven't gone "back to school." The year after I graduated college I worked for my sorority and traveled the country with them. I went "back to school" that fall about 6 or 7 times attending multiple recruitments. Then the next year I joined staff with Cru and went "back to school" to meet hundreds of freshman as they moved into their dorms, joined sororities, and settled into their own college experience. Every year since then I've done the same, including last year when I hauled my pregnant butt to a quaint coffee shop off campus called The Whitehouse and had spiritual conversations with sorority girl after sorority girl. So good.

But, I'm done with that season of life. Today many of my friends will hit campuses all over the country to meet students and build relationship with them. My news feeds are blowing up with the most precious back to school pictures of little ones. Mothers are sitting in empty or quiet(er) homes today for the first time in years. Part of me looks forward to the time when Rae will go off to school (or stay here and do school, who knows) and part of me dreads it. We've got some time :)

Watching//
Nothing. It always sounds so darn good to have a movie date with Jordan but there is nothing ever good on Netflix! We only have basic TV channels and steal borrow my sister-in-laws Netflix. Last night we made homemade pizzas and plopped down on the couch to end our slow and restful (yet emotionally draining) weekend, ready to chill in front of a funny movie or TV show. We turned on Portlandia since we are headed to Portland in October...it was ridiculous. We turned it off. Then we thought "Oh! The West Wing!! That'll be good!" No. 90's politics....just, no. Soooo we went to bed, haha. I know, we are so boring.

Marveling//
That my tomato plant started producing again! Y'all I honestly don't know anything about gardening or tomato plants but my mother-in-law does. She told me that the tomatoes wouldn't produce anymore because it was too hot! I had tried everything I could to help them continue growing but they seemed to be at a stand still. Then this weekend I went out there to check on my herbs and there were like 6 tomatoes?!! I promptly pruned that sucker which had gotten really unruly and picked a couple tomatoes. I hope this lasts!! (No idea how long this will last....til winter? What do I do when winter comes? HELP)

  1. My daughter just turned 4 last week. If we don't homeschool next year, I'm DREADING it; she adds so much joy to my day.

  2. Oh gosh I know. I do love the idea of having her home for a few more years and taking ownership of her early education. It'll be a hard decision either way!!

  3. I love the back to school time of year. What a change it must be for you to not be partaking in the usual back to school excitement, but you're right that season of your life is over and you're not on to something else :) I find it's nice to sit back and watch everyone else get ready for the school year, my routine doesn't really change at all as my daughter is only (just under) two, but I'm sure that will change in a year or two and I will be wishing for these days back!

My husband and I also always turn on netflix to watch a movie, or a show but end up just going to bed because there never seems to be anything on!

  4. Haha, it's terrible! I don't know why I'm surprised that shows and movies are getting so bad year after year. My faves have been the cooking documentaries on Netflix that my husband sometimes obliges to watch with me ;)

  5. Ha! I can totally relate to the t.v. thing. Every time we are lucky enough to have nothing to do for a night or afternoon and want to chill out on the couch, there is nothing to watch. Even if we do find a good movie, I usually pass out about 5 minutes into it like an old lady.

  14. ..but that time for them to go off to school will be here before we know it. I was just thinking about the same thing for my lil one!! And agree with Netflix - I think it's just hard to sort through to find the good stuff. And the good stuff = what I want to watch right at that moment, based on my emotions, thoughts and current point of view. I don't know why Netflix can't read our minds :) haha!
    have a fantastic week!

  17. Hahahah so true!! That's funny. We actually watched a documentary last night called "Shelter Island" I think......super interesting man with Aspergers who is an incredibly talented artist. I thought about this post and was like, here's a winner! But then again we like quirky stuff ;)

  18. HA! I wish... well, one thing that seems to have really helped is we got one of those self-watering bulbs that allows the plant to only drink when he's thirsty (yes, I refer to my plants as a he and his name is Mater, too ;) ). That's helped so much! I also try to cut off any branches towards the bottom of the plant because those wont' produce anything and it just takes energy away from the rest of the plant.

  19. hahaahaha mater!! Man I pruned it but don't have the self watering kind...hmm....

  20. I've killed quite a few tomato plants and this last one has done SO much better than any other. So I can really only attribute that to the water bulb! I went to check on it yesterday and there are about a dozen flowers, so apparently this is just a late season for tomatoes!
